When you go to the doctor’s office and fill out paperwork it usually asks if you exercise and how often you exercise. Are you sedentary, somewhat active, active or very active? This is important information for the doctor to know. This is also important information for insurance companies as they may give you a better rate if you exercise and many employers will pay for your gym membership. But the most important reason to exercise is to take care of yourself and your family so you can live a long and healthy life. Regular exercise reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, reduces body fat, protects against stroke and heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and improves mood. Exercise also builds muscles to support the body and helps protect joints by easing pain and swelling. For women weight bearing exercise such as running and weight lifting protect against bone loss and arthritis.
The two types of exercise you should do are aerobic and anaerobic to condition your heart and improve stamina. Running, jumping rope, elliptical trainer, rowing, biking and dancing are aerobic exercises that condition your heart and improve stamina. Weight lifting is important to strengthen your muscles and your bones. By incorporating these two types of exercise into a daily routine you will greatly benefit from your exercise days.
