COMFORT FOODS

When the going gets tough many people get going to the refrigerator to find something good to eat.  The choices made at tough times are usually not healthy ones.  The chocolate chip cookies, the cookie dough ice cream, custard pie, chocolate cake and donuts are calling your name.  During times of stress, they can be hard to resist.  Indulging in these types of treats will increase your waistline and your bottom line.  How do you avoid reaching for the most fattening high calorie food when you are feeling down, depressed and frustrated?  That is the question many people are asking themselves right now.

Stressed spelled backwards is desserts and that is what people reach for when they are stressed.  When a small child gets hurt give them a cookie.  Figuring out how you came to depend on sweet snacks is easy.  When a child gets a shot at the doctor give them a sucker.  When you go to grandma’s house, she cooks a big meal with meat, potatoes, gravy and biscuits.  Breakfast is pancakes or waffles with butter and syrup.  From the time you turn one year old and get that first bite of cake with fluffy frosting you are convinced that sweet treats are what you eat when you are celebrating.  When you fall or get hurt a cookie makes it better.  The shot at the doctor is soon forgotten when you are given a sucker.

Changing that mind set may be a little harder but it is easy when you know what changes you need to make.  There are many foods that are naturally sweet, juicy, fluffy and taste great.  Fresh fruit, vegetables like winter squash, Garnet yams, Japanese yams, Yukon Gold potatoes, peas, carrots, beets, green beans, broccoli, brown rice, 100% whole grain breads and the list goes on.  Making these healthy foods your go to foods for a healthy body and mind will change your relationship with food and help you create healthy food choices.  Make sure when you eat you are hungry and not stressed, lonely or bored.
