SUGAR CRAVINGS

There are many reasons that people crave sugar and sweet treats whether they are in the form of candies, cakes, donuts, or sugary drinks.  One of the biggest reasons is the quick energy that sugar provides.  A lack of sleep can cause people to crave the boost of sugar and caffeine (which is also in chocolate and caffeinated drinks) to give them a lift to get through the day.  People turn to sweets when they feel bad for the same reason.  Another reason for sugar cravings is fluctuation of hormones in the body.

Giving into these cravings and eating sugary treats and sugary drinks can lead to weight gain as well as increased risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.  Sugar also increases hunger, acne and wrinkles and can cause irritability and low energy due to the drop in blood sugar soon afterwards. Consumption of added sugars can also lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as well as cognitive decline.  These are all great reasons to avoid added sugars or even large amounts of foods such as dried fruits which are high in sugar.

Great ways to keep the cravings for sugar away are to avoid foods and treats that are high in sugar and low in nutrition.  When you eat cake, candy, or sugary drinks your blood sugar spikes and then drops soon after leaving you craving more sugar.  If you choose foods that are full of fiber and nutrients your body will fill full and satisfied eliminating cravings.  By combining foods like fruit and plain yogurt you get the sweet flavor, fiber, and vitamins from the fruit along with the protein from the yogurt which will help keep you feeling full and satisfied.  By eating small frequent meals that combine complex carbohydrates and lean protein the body gets all the necessary fuel for your entire day.

The number one priority in life is to take care of your body so you can live a long healthy life.  When you take good care of yourself you will be more productive and have more energy to do the things you want to do.  You can live life to the fullest!

Love and best wishes,
