POSTURE

Standing and sitting up straight is something that parents always taught their children from an early age.  I remember my mom and dad telling me and my brothers to sit up straight and don’t slouch.  They never gave any explanation but I am glad I have great posture to this day.

When the body is in a slumped position it puts pressure on the lungs preventing them from fully expanding.  This puts stress on the body and can even cause premature death from lack of proper oxygen supply to the body.  Good posture benefits all the organs in the body.

Many problems can be avoided by strengthening the core and practicing good posture.  Doing core exercises daily will increase strength making it easier to hold proper body alignment.  The spine greatly benefits by good posture because it has less stress which can reduce back and neck pain.  This is also a great way to relieve tension, fatigue, and many other common ailments.

To improve posture practice sitting up straight while contracting your abdominal muscles.  Put your feet flat on the floor and pull up from the crown of your head.  When sitting for long periods take a walking break every hour.  Balance a book on your head while walking to ensure proper alignment.  Do some stretching and deep breathing before returning to sitting. A strong core makes it easy to maintain great posture.

Standing tall with head up and shoulders back increases confidence and improves overall health and wellbeing.
